John Ashcroft Has Resigned
I'm extremely curious to know the machinations behind John Ashcroft's departure from the administration. Was this the original plan, is he being dumped because he is particularly divisive, is it his choice, whome will he be replaced with, etc. But I am temporarily sated by this tidbit from his letter of resignation:
The objective of securing the safety of Americans from crime and terror has been achieved.Umm, OK, thanks for that. I guess we're all safe now. If this is any indication, Bush's second term is sure to be as surreal as his first.

Actually, Ashcroft probably just needs to start prepping for his confirmation hearings to be the next Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court ... (chuckle)
As to his comment about securing the safety of Americans, this strikes me as another "Mission Accomplished" statement that can be interpreted multiple ways, largely dependant upon one's ideology and partisan affiliation. Just as the "Mission Accomplished" sign pertained only to the role the USS Abraham Lincoln had played in removing Saddam Hussein from power, so Ashcroft's statement can be seen as speaking to the fact that there hasn't been another successful terrorist attack on US soil since 9-11 ... a clear indication of successfully meeting an objective.
Ummm, we were attacked ON his watch. And the finality of the words he chose to use, "has been achieved," doesn't acknowledge the truth about the war on terror, a truth that Bush admitted in an extraordinary moment of candor, that it can't really be won, that there will not be any finality to it ultimately. This is not to say that the fact that we have not been attacked again goes unnoticed or unappreciated.
