Maureen Dowd on The Daily Show
As if The Daily Show couldn't get any better, tonight Jon welcomed Maureen Dowd of The New York Times. She's promoting her new book, Bushworld, which is a compendium of her columns and stories about the Bushes. As maddening as her consistently brilliant writing can be, she charmed the pants off me, and apparently Jon and the audience as well, especially with this analysis of the epic tale of George W Bush:
I think I'm in love.
Maureen: It's exactly the hero myth. That's exactly what the Bush family is. The hero goes out into the world and he's a young unformed hero and then, it's just like Star Wars and Bush is Luke Skywalker. He has the good light father [Obi Wan Kenobi] who is his own father who believed in internationalism and getting along with the allies and leaving the end of the Iraq war where it was and then there's the dark father, Darth Vader Dick Cheney who believes in bullying and unilateralism and not leaving the Iraq war where it was.
Jon: Why is that? What happened to Dick?
Maureen: He's barking mad, I don't know.
I think I'm in love.
